Want a family fun getaway sure to be memorable? Take the kids to see Michigan’s largest freshwater spring, rich in native American history.

Kitch-Iti-Kipi, located in Palms Book State Park, is one of the most-visited vacation spots in the U.P during the fall and summer months. This 40-foot deep, emerald, green natural spring is just as beautiful in the spring and winter months, only you won’t be battling crowds.

Just west of Manistique, MI, you’ll love the raft ride on the hand-operated viewing raft that allows you to traverse a 200-foot-wide natural spring and watch the water bubble up from fissured in the underlying limestone.

From your spot on this observation raft, you’ll glide across the icy waters of the spring, and watch the fish feeding on the bottom.

Things to Do in Southeast Michigan for Spring Break

Belle Isle Aquarium

If you’ve ever wondered what’s going on down near the bottom of your favorite Michigan lake, you can find out at this downtown Detroit Aquarium. Have you ever seen a Michigan Gar Pike up close? Now’s your chance: the Belle Isle Aquarium houses a huge collection of fish native to Michigan’s Great Lakes.

There’s more to see here: the Belle Isle Aquarium houses one of the most unique collections of fish in the country.

Here’s an added bonus: the historic aquarium was designed by noted architect Albert Kahn, and features rare, green opaline glass tiles lining its vaulted ceiling. It’s a great opportunity to appreciate some of the amazing architecture in city of Detroit.

PRO-TIP: Plan to spend some time exploring Belle Isle. Be sure and bring your camera, and a telephoto lens if you have one, there’s an eagle living on the island and you can capture some great photos.

Detroit Institute of Arts

With one of the country’s largest collections of art, the Detroit Institute of Arts offers you a chance to meet the works of Monet, Matisse, Renoir, and hundreds of other renowned artists up close and personal.

The museum hosts collections of American and European Art; art from Asia and Africa and more, but your kid’s favorite exhibits will be in the Egyptian section. That’s where they can see remains of real mummies, dating back a thousand years!

Be sure and stop by the elegant Kresge Court for a bite to eat, and marvel at the murals depicting Detroit’s industrial heritage by artist Diego Rivera.

PRO-TIP: Plan your visit on a Saturday, after a trip to Detroit’s Eastern Market, one of the biggest open-air farmers markets in the country.

Kensington Metro Park Petting Farm

This delightful petting farm is set in the heart of one of southeast Detroit’s best parks. Kensington is home to a golf course, two lakes, a water park, endless hiking trails, and more, but our favorite part is the petting farm.

The Kensington Metropark Farm Center, housed in a 150-year-old restored barn, is truly fun for all ages. You can walk the stone path through the farm and visit with horses, cows, chickens, goats, and more. Both petting and feeding are sometimes permitted, check with staff.

It’s a charming little spot, you’ll also find a blacksmith shop and brick oven and an abundant herb garden. Make a day of it and spend some time playing on the sprawling children’s play structures found at both Martindale and Maple Lakes.

This hands-on science museum in Lansing hits all the right senses: sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell. That’s the basis for its name, “Impression 5,” and it does not disappoint.

Watch as your kids become engrossed with prisms, mirrors, magnets, and our family favorite, the “Chew on This” exhibit. This covers the what and whys of dental health without ever getting preachy. We’ll bet you get some better tooth-brushers out of it!

There are 25,000 square feet of science play here, you’ll have a hard time dragging your kids away from all of the learning.

This free local History Museum set in a historic building offers an opportunity to travel back in time and exhibits on topics such as Native Americans and early pioneers of the west Ottawa county area.
