Fortunately for us, we were able to stay at Potomac Pointe Condominiums, a lovely three-story condo complex on the Potomac River. It was a direct hit from the flood, but its owner insisted that we stay. (Such gracious accommodations I cannot forget.) We were having a ball, enjoying the views and playing in the sand, so we felt it was safe to stay.
The real Virginia is far away from the urban stereotype. To appreciate the old Virginia, you need to roam around the countryside roads — where country houses give way to the balds — basically the mountain pastures. On those roads, you will encounter several authentic local holiday destinations like Locust Grove, Croom Wildlife Refuge and Blue Ridge Parkway with plenty of natural spots to go camping and enjoy some quality time away from the hectic city schedules.

If you’re seeking more adventure than an 18th-century colony can provide, head to Busch Gardens Williamsburg to get your thrills on their world-class roller coasters and rides. For another round of history, stop at the Yorktown Battlefield and Jamestown.
