Visa For Kilimanjaro

You climb Kilimanjaro because of the incredible views at its peak. But, that’s not why you get a visa for Mount Kilimanjaro. Read on to find out why you need a visa and how to get one.

I needed to take a vacation. I live in a city where the biggest outside distractions are chickens and cows. We have snakes, monkeys, dogs, cats and horses as pets, but beyond that there isn’t much to see here. So I have no choice but to travel at least once a year to places that have mountains or oceans. Last year we went to Dubai for our vacation, which was fun for a couple days, then I longed for the love of my life – Kilimanjaro.

When most people think of a climb up Mount Kilimanjaro, they picture the Volcano: snow-capped and majestic. But there is much more than just the Volcano when it comes to climbing the mountain.

Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest peak in Africa, standing 19,341 feet (5,895m) tall from its base to its tip. Considered one of the most difficult and dangerous routes on the mountain, the Machame route is one of three main climbing routes. This hike is famous for its star appearance in the movie “The Ghost and the Darkness.” Trekkers traverse various terrains transitioning between rainforest to desert as they climb toward Uhuru Peak.

Getting to the roof of Africa means going through a lot of obstacles, like a huge mountain and the visa. The mountain has been conquered but you will still have to face the visa.

One of the most important documents we have at our disposal is a copy of our passport. It serves as an important identification card and allows us to cross international borders.

What Are the New Requirements for the Tanzania Visa on Arrival?

Previously, the process of obtaining a Tanzania visa on arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport was the same as at other border entry points in the country. Travelers are required to wait in an immigration queue to complete a visa on arrival application and pay a fee in cash. It is also necessary to provide immigration with evidence of a return flight ticket or a ticket to an onward destination.

However, the government of Tanzania has now implemented new requirements for a visa on arrival for travelers arriving at Kilimanjaro International Airport which have added several more steps to the process. Those who arrive at this Tanzanian airport without a visa are now required to:

  • Wait in line for a Government Control Number (GCN)
  • Queue to pay for the GCN at the bank
  • Wait in line to have Immigration check the approved GCN
  • Complete the visa on arrival application and pay the required fee.

Although local authorities are implementing measures to speed up the process, the new requirements mean that it will now take over 2 hours to complete the visa on arrival application at Kilimanjaro Airport and gain entry to the country.
The new requirements for a Tanzania visa on arrival are only being implemented at Kilimanjaro International Airport. Travelers who arrive at other ports of entry in Tanzania, such as Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam, will not be required to queue and pay for a Government Control Number for a visa on arrival.

Tanzania Visitor Visa

Most foreign visitors are required to obtain a visa for entry into Tanzania, there are some exceptions. The visa doesn’t always need to be obtained prior to arrival as they can be issued at the port of entry.

Generally, all visitors from non-Commonwealth countries need a visa for entry, unless your country has an agreement with Tanzania under which this requirement has been waived.

Visitors from some Commonwealth countries don’t need a visa for entry, but citizens of the UK, Australia, New Zealand, India, United States, Canada, and most EU countries are not exempt.

Some travelers prefer to arrange their visas in advance, and this can be done by contacting the Tanzanian embassy in your home country. They normally require you to send in your passport, an application form and passport photos for processing

Conclusion

There are many things in life that are free, but some are better than others. This was an example of my favorite of these things because it is the best experience I have ever had for nothing. I don’t know when or if I will go back, but if I do go back to Tanzania, if there is a place to stay with such wonderful hosts, I will try and stay there again. The most important thing I can say about this experience is that it made me step outside my comfort zone and in so doing gave me an opportunity to learn more personally about myself. It was the best vacation I have ever taken.
