If you’re planning a trip to Botswana, you’re going to need a visa. Unfortunately, obtaining a visa for Botswana from South Africa is not as simple as it might seem. Unlike some other countries that offer visas on arrival, Botswana does not.

To obtain a visa for Botswana from South Africa, you must first apply for one through the Embassy of Botswana in Pretoria or Johannesburg. You can submit your application at one of these offices or by mail, but either way you will have to pay a processing fee before your passport is stamped with the visa.

Once your application has been accepted and processed, you can pick up your passport with the stamp at one of these two embassies. Be sure to bring along any documentation required by the embassy staff before picking up your passport so that they can process it quickly and efficiently!

If you are a South African looking to travel to Botswana, there are a few things you need to know about the visa process.

First, if you have already applied for and received a visa from Botswana and your previous visa has expired, you can apply at any time and receive an extension of your visa without having to go through the entire application process again.

If you do not have a previous visa from Botswana, then you must complete all of the necessary applications and pay the associated fees before visiting Botswana. This includes:

First of all, if you want to visit Botswana, you’ll need a visa. Fortunately, getting one is pretty simple: just head over to the Botswana consulate in Johannesburg and fill out an application form. You can also get one online if you don’t want to deal with paperwork in person (though we recommend going in person so that they have time to talk through any questions or concerns).

Once you’ve submitted your application form, check back in about two weeks for your visa—and then head on over!

WHAT IS A VISA?

A visa is issued to international travellers visiting Botswana for a short stay on a temporary basis for tourism, business, study or medical reasons. Visas are normally issued for a maximum 30 or 90 days, depending on your country of residence.

A valid visa allows you to enter the country through a port of entry and stay in the country for the period specified in your visa. Note that you are restricted to the activity or reason stated in your application, for example, if you applied for a visa for a holiday or family visit, you are not allowed to work in the country during your stay.

VISA REQUIREMENTS FOR VISITING BOTSWANA

The Botswana tourist visa is issued for short-term purposes – up to 90 days maximum. Nationals of most countries are exempt from applying for a Botswana tourist visa prior to travel, but they still have to obtain a visa if they want to stay long-term.

Visitors holding passports from countries that are classified as ‘exempt’ do not need to apply for a visa prior to arriving in Botswana. Instead, they are issued with a short-stay visa at the point of entry for a period of time relevant to the status of the visitor’s country.

The time it takes to process a Botswana visa is 21 working days, this is for all visa types and for all non-exempt countries. Unfortunately, Botswana does not yet allow e-visas.

It is advised to apply for your Botswana visa 1 to 2 months before your trip.

The duration of a Botswana visa depends on the number of entries it allows. Botswana multiple entry tourist visa allows a stay of 3 months and is valid for 3 months. While a single-entry visa allows a stay of one month and is valid for one month.

A transit visa is not required if you are continuing your journey by the same or first connecting aircraft, and you do not leave the airport.

The CDC and WHO recommend the following vaccinations for Botswana: hepatitis A, hepatitis B, typhoid, yellow fever, rabies, meningitis, polio, measles, mumps and rubella (MMR), Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis), chickenpox, shingles, pneumonia and influenza

WHAT HAPPENS IF ONE OVERSTAYS ON A VISA IN BOTSWANA

Overstaying the duration of your visa is a serious offence in Botswana, you will be fined daily and may even incur a ban, which prevents you from applying for a visa and re-entering Botswana for a prescribed period of time.

Individuals who have been affected by the overstay visa regulations of a country can usually lodge a visa overstay appeal.

The charge of overstay in terms of the Immigration Act is P100 for each day of the overstay. The Police determine the charge and while the Government website is a good reference point, information is not always up-to-date.
