Yes, Ugandans need a visa to travel to South Africa. Ordinary passport holders from Uganda must apply for a visa for South Africa before departure.

Tourists and other eligible short-term visitors from Uganda can now get a South African visa online. South Africa launched an eVisa for Ugandans, and 13 other nationalities, in February 2022.

Other types of South African visas are available for Ugandans who do not meet the eVisa requirements.

To be eligible for the South African eVisa, Ugandans must be visiting for tourism or other approved activities.

South Africa’s new eVisa is valid for short stays in the country. It makes it easier for Ugandans to visit South Africa on holiday.

Ugandan citizens still need to get a visa from the South African embassy to work or stay long-term.

Documents to get a South African eVisa from Uganda

To get a South African visa online from Uganda, travellers must have:

  • Ugandan passport valid for a minimum of 30 days after the date they will leave South Africa
  • Email address to receive notification and the approved eVisa
  • Debit or credit card to pay the South Africa visa fees securely online

Further supporting documents could be requested in some cases.

Information required to apply for a South African eVisa from Uganda

Ugandan travellers need to complete the South African eVisa form with basic personal information and passport details.

Required details include:

  • Full name, date of birth, and nationality
  • Passport number, issue date, and expiry date
  • Date of arrival in South Africa and purpose of the visit

Additional health and security information could be requested.

Ugandans should revise their application carefully before submitting the form. The information provided must match the Ugandan passport exactly. Missing data or mistakes could result in processing delays.

Travelling to South Africa from Uganda: entry requirements

Ugandan citizens must present the following documents to South African immigration officials.

  • Valid Ugandan passport
  • South African visa
  • Return or onward flight ticket
  • Enough funds to cover the trip
  • COVID-19 health documents

Visitors must check the latest COVID-19 entry restrictions in South Africa. Currently, international travellers need to fill out a health declaration form and take a pre-departure COVID-19 test.

A yellow fever certificate is required if arriving from a high-risk area.
