Partnership Visa In Australia

The Australian government has come up with a new visa that is simply called the Partnership Visa. This visa is applicable to applicants who are in an “interdependent” relationship.

The Australian partnership visa is for partners or spouses of Australians to live in Australia long-term and experience Australian life. If you have a partner or are married to an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen, you can be granted this visa with relative ease. However, there are some requirements which must be satisfied before approval is gained, and in the case of a de facto relationship, the relationship must be stable.

On 17 October 2012, the Australian Government introduced a new visa category known as the “partnership visa”. This is designed for Australian citizens who want to sponsor their unmarried partners to relocate to Australia. The visa allows such couples to live together permanently in Australia and it is specifically different from the dependent visa.

Partnership Visa In Australia

The partnership visa is a temporary or permanent visa option for Australian citizens and non-citizens who wish to relocate and embark upon a de facto relationship with their partner. This visa is only open to individuals in a genuine, committed relationship where one person moves to the other’s location for their application.

What is a Partner Visa (Subclasses 820 and 801)?

There are two types of Partner Visas: Subclass 820 and Subclass 801. The Subclass 820 visa is a temporary partner visa that allows you to live in Australia. The Subclass 820 visa is the first stage towards a permanent Partner Visa (Subclass 801). You apply for both visas at the same time and pay only one application charge. Applications are processed in two stages, about two years apart.

To be eligible, you must be married to or in a de facto relationship with:

  • An Australian citizen
  • An Australian permanent resident
  • An eligible New Zealand citizen

What Are the Benefits of a Partner Visa (Subclasses 820 and 801)?

The Temporary Partner visa allows you limited benefits, including:

  • Live and work in Australia until a decision is made about your permanent Partner Visa (Subclass 801)
  • Study in Australia (without access to government funding)
  • Enrol in Medicare, Australia’s scheme for health-related care and expenses
  • Include dependent children on your application (dependent applicants must be in Australia when they apply)

The Permanent Partner Visa (Subclass 801) includes all the benefits of Australian permanent residency:

  • Work and live in Australia indefinitely
  • Opportunity to study in Australia
  • Enrol in Medicare, Australia’s state-run healthcare program
  • Opportunity to apply for Australian citizenship
  • Sponsor relatives for permanent residence
  • Travel in and out of Australia as you please
