-Inner Core: These are the most popular beaches with white sand and soft waves. They’re also usually crowded during peak season (May-September).
-Outer Core: Here you’ll find calmer waters and fewer crowds than at the Inner Core beaches. The water’s also often warmer here than it is at other beaches in the area because these spots are protected from wind by barrier islands.
-Outer Banks Barrier Islands: These islands create coves that protect the ocean from strong winds and allow for calmer waters than you’d find on an open beach like those found further south along Highway 12 near Kitty Hawk or Duck).
