If you are a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident and you would like to invite your spouse to come to Canada, you can do so through the Canadian Experience Class (CEC). Under this program, your spouse would be able to apply for an open work permit and be allowed to work while they wait for their permanent residence application to be processed.
A Canadian citizen or Permanent Resident has the option to get a job in Canada through the Canadian Experience Class (CEC). If you have lived outside Canada for more than one year and came back recently, and are applying to become a permanent resident through the CEC stream in BC and Ontario, you can file your application under the open work permit policy rule.

There are a number of requirements that need to be included in your spouse’s application but the most important requirement is they must prove they will leave Canada at the end of their work permit.Other requirements may include proving that the couple has the ability to financially support themselves.They must show that they have purchased (or rented) a home in Canada along with showing proof of stable employment, letters from past employers and other forms of documentation.
Who can get a work permit as the spouse or common-law partner of a student?
Your spouse or common-law partner may be eligible for an open work permit if you:
- have a valid study permit
- are eligible for a post-graduation work permit (PGWP) and
- are a full-time student at one of these types of schools:
- a public post-secondary school, such as a college or university, or CEGEP in Quebec
- a private college-level school in Quebec
- a Canadian private school that can legally award degrees under provincial law (for example, Bachelors, Masters or Doctorate degree)

Processing an open work permit usually takes several months. There are many factors that can affect the processing time.

Your spouse or common-law partner’s work permit will be valid for the same period of time as your study permit.
