India is the seventh highest immigration receiving country in the world. In order to be in India, tourists (should) need a visa, most of the time. Visas can be obtained by submitting an application to one of several categories given below, depending on what you want to do in India.

Applying for an Indian visa used to be a pretty leisurely affair. Things got a bit more complicated in 2012, and it’s not that easy a process today. But at least we know from where the difficulty stems. The Indian government wants you to have pre-arranged your visa before coming down to visit India. That can mean applying for your visa online or submitting a printed copy of the visa application form when you arrive at the airport (depending on which tourist visa type you’ve applied for). It is also possible to apply for a business visa online, but this must be approved by the office of Immigration and Visa upon arrival as well. I’m quite surprised that no information about this is available from the Ministry of Home Affairs website. If only they could put up an FAQ page with all these answers. But apparently they don’t consider this something that Indians need to know. It would probably make it too easy for us to get visas and flood their country with more tourists!

Foreign visitors who wish to visit India must obtain a visa to enter the country. The only countries that do not require a visa or passport to enter India are citizens of Bhutan and Nepal. In 2014, India launched an electronic visa system that simplified the process of obtaining a visa to visit the country. Currently, citizens of over a hundred countries can easily obtain their e-Visa for India by completing an online form and providing some biographical details.
