Ventura

Ojai

Ojai is a charming town that’s the place to be if you’re looking for arts, culture, and spirituality. Solvang

It’s also fun to visit the Danish-themed town of Solvang for a cheap weekend getaway, especially if you set your mind to just window shopping and not splurging on all the fun décor and souvenirs for sale here. Solvang has an iconic windmill, cute shops, tempting bakeries, and very walkable streets to explore on foot.

This is also a popular spot for kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, jet skiing, fishing, and wakeboarding. When winter comes around, you can come here for skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing. In the downtown area, you’ll find shops and restaurants to explore.

It feels like a true getaway here and one that you can experience on a budget, especially if you spend a lot of time outdoors and camp at a National Forest Service campground.

Dana Point

Dana Point is a relaxing and affordable beach vacation destination that is popular among families. It is between San Diego and Los Angeles and has calm waters that are great for swimming, paddleboarding, and kayaking.

Death Valley National Park

Every SoCal resident and visitor needs to go to Death Valley National Park to experience this epic land of extremes and adventure. The park has wildly diverse regions that feature everything from salt flats to sand dunes and colorful rock formations.

Be mindful of the fact that Death Valley gets insanely hot in the summer. But in the cooler months, it’s fun to camp here in a tent or RV. After the summer, more campgrounds here open up, and it’s very rare for them all to fill up even on the busiest of weekends. Several campgrounds, such as Wildrose and Mahogany Creek, are free and open on a first-come, first-served basis.

Oxnard

Oxnard is a beach destination that often gets overshadowed by its famous neighbors, like Malibu. That’s a good thing though because Oxnard is a bit more affordable than the surrounding areas and also offers access to the Channel Islands.

You can watch for whales here, spend time at Mandalay Beach, and visit the Channel Islands Maritime Museum.
