The Maldives are well known for their incredible beaches, but did you know that there’s more to this island paradise than just the sand and surf?
The Maldives are a collection of 1,200 islands, which are spread out over 100,000 square miles. The islands are divided into 26 atolls—groups of islands clustered together by long stretches of ocean. Most of these atolls have only one island in them, while others have up to ten.
Each atoll is made up of multiple bays, or lagoons. These lagoons are usually surrounded by coral reefs that protect them from waves and currents. The lagoons can be as wide as 10 kilometers (6 miles) or as narrow as 500 meters (1,640 feet). The depths vary widely too—some go down as deep as 1 kilometer (3,280 feet). Others go no deeper than 15 meters (49 feet).
The lagoons are home to many different kinds of marine life including fish and turtles. Some species found here include clownfish (known for their distinctive orange-and-white stripes), angelfish (with their shimmering silver scales), sharks and rays. In fact there are over 500 different types of fish found in these waters!

This is a stunning property and is set up brilliantly for a relaxing stay, with gorgeous settings and lovely staff. Our host Rafu was exceptional – both polite, helpful and great with our toddler. The one area to improve is to be more proactive with arranging guest transfers. The island is located at the edge of the Maldives so transfers are less frequent and can be unsociable hours; we would have appreciated better upfront planning or at least notification of potential timing challenges. All in all, do pick this hotel as it is fabulous but ensure you know your plans in detail for transfers to avoid a bumpy set of discussions

I can’t begin to describe how amazing my experience at Thudufushi was. The pictures don’t do this place justice. It is literal heaven on earth. The staff was all absolutely amazing. I stayed in the Overwater Jacuzzi Villa and let me tell you, if you have never stayed in an Overwater Villa you are missing out. I stayed the first week of November 2018 for my honeymoon and even the weather was amazing. The staff treats you like great friends that you’ve known for years. So many great things about this beautiful place. I will definitely be returning soon!
