The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is a standardized test that measures your ability to communicate in English. It is used by many countries as part of their immigration process when applying for a visa or residence permit.
This test measures four skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking and takes about two hours to complete. It is comprised of two parts; one part takes about two hours and has two sections: an academic module and an occupational module. The other part takes about 30 minutes and has one section with multiple questions based on general topics such as work experience, family life etcetera.
To gain points towards your application you need at least 6 points in each section of the test which is equivalent to having a score of 7 or above out of 9 in each section (both parts together). To get 7 points out of 9 in either part means that you will have achieved what is known as ‘superior’ level.

The short answer is that you don’t need to take the IELTS test for your New Zealand work visa. You will most likely have to submit a IELTS score if you apply for a job in NZ, but you do not need it to apply for the visa itself.
