How To Apply For Open Work Permit For My Spouse

It has been a year and my spouse still does not have a valid work permit and I feel that it is time to apply for one. I know the rules state that she is not eligible to apply for her permanent residence as a sponsored person. But can she apply as an open work permit holder? I cannot find an answer on this matter on immigration.gc.ca or cic.gc.ca because it seems like there are still many items under inquiry and feedbacks which means that they are planning of incorporating answers in these websites so I plan to check them regularly until I get an idea on how to proceed regarding this issue.

The work per application is an open work permit which allows a non-Canadian, who is the spouse or common-law partner of a temporary resident outside Canada, to travel to Canada and work for any employer in any location for up to 2 years. If you are the spouse or common law partner of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, you can apply for an open work permit. With this option, you do not need a job offer from one employer.

Now that you’ve made the commitment to move forward with sponsoring your husband or wife for a work permit, it’s time to take action. While you’ve been planning the permanent residence application, the government has been working on implementing the rules for open work permits and the applications are now available through CIC’s website.
