Janny Gibson’s thrilled to finally be celebrating this year the graduation of her second keiki.
So much so that she’s throwing a big party to commemorate the milestone.
“Our last graduate was in 2020 — our oldest daughter graduating from Kamehameha — and she didn’t get to have prom or graduation. We were pretty sad we could just do a little drive by,” she said. “But this year we’re so excited because our son Kahai is graduating. We’re definitely going to throw him a party for our whole family and friends.”
It’s the first time in two years residents can have large celebrations and businesses are welcoming the pent-up demand.
Between college commencements and more than 40 high school graduations beginning next week, operators are hoping to generate enough revenue to offset some of their losses during the pandemic.
“Graduation season is the busiest time of the year because we have over 50% of the parties are graduation parties,” said Ron Hattori, general manager of A Catered Experience. “It’s very important. It’s been a tough two years.”
Business came to a halt during the height of the pandemic and then only partially returned last year with drive-by graduation parties.
Today it’s so busy that many restaurant owners who find themselves with smaller and limited staffs, are now struggling to keep up.
“We were doing some drive through, but it’s not the same as having a graduation party so as things opened up, the parties started off really small but they seem to be getting bigger and bigger,” Hattori added.
Restaurant and venue operators advise reserving graduation parties at least a year in advance.
