Five Things I Like About Summer Vacation

Schools close. Grades stop climbing. Kids rejoice! Okay, that last one is a bit of an exaggeration—but kids do enjoy summer vacation. It gives them time to relax from the school year, and try new things. Hang out with friends, test their mettle against camp counselors in Nerf battles, catch up on reading. And for parents it means more unsupervised time — as in, “the beach” and “vacation” (in reality, it’s usually just the backyard). But no matter what you’re doing over the summer months, there are always things to appreciate about it. You don’t have to be a weather geek to have a fondness for seasonal change and warmth. So before those long hot summers nights start rolling around, here are the top things we like about summer vacation.

I Love Summer Season Because

I’m going on summer vacation and I’m stoked! I know it’s not exactly a unique sentiment but I feel like a lot of people don’t look forward to summer vacation. Summer vacations never really feel like vacations because you’re focused on what you have do to when you get back. Since I’ve interned at the McNally Smith College of Music and taken some college courses, I’ve learned that, in my opinion, there are five things we should pay attention to during our summer vacations: School is out! The weather’s getting warmer, and the neighborhood kids are out of school for summer vacation.

This summer, I had the pleasure of attending and teaching a 4-week Summer Camp at a Scouting event. Before I went to teach I thought about my presentation and the things that students might enjoy and remember with regards to the outdoors. After several brainstorming sessions and reflection, I determined there were five key concepts or events that stuck out in my mind.

Good Things About Summer Break

School life is great for a lot of us because of different reasons. Some love the sports, some love chilling with friends and some love studying too (we’re looking at you, geek squad!). But there’s one thing that everyone absolutely loves: summer vacations! The joys of waking up late in the morning, going out to play with friends for hours at end and the five golden words your mom tells you every summer: Naani ke ghar jaana hai!

Let’s take a quick look at the different reasons why we <3 summer vacations!

1. Mangoes

“It’s not summer until you’ve eaten a mango” – Australian proverb.

The joy of eating a mango, can probably only compare to…well let’s be honest, it’s incomparable.

2. Sleeping

If someone ever wrote a book on ‘how to spend your life in bliss’, sleeping would be a big chapter in there. Sleeping in late during the summer vacations is a boon especially for all students who have to drag themselves to school early in the morning. Phrases like ‘good night’ and ‘sweet dreams’ were probably coined during summer vacations!

Well, this is probably more of a guy thing, but the shouts and screams of ‘howzatttt’ from your gully in the afternoon definitely means that summer vacations have arrived!

4. Reading books

Imagine reading your favourite author in that quiet corner of your home for hours together. The mysteries of Nancy Drew, the fearful excitement of knowing Voldemort was around whenever Harry’s scar pulled or the mysteries of Narnia uncovered with every page turned over – best time ever, right?

5. Vacations

Going out of town for a trip to mama’s or nani’s houseis almost as exciting as not going to school for two whole months! Apart from nani’s yummy food, there’s also the added excitement of meeting friends you hang out with only once in the year!

10 Reasons To Love Summer

1. It stays lighter longer

Sometimes in the winter it can feel like the sun barely makes an appearance for more than four hours a day. One of the best parts of summer is that it doesn’t get dark until around 8:30 or 9pm, which means more time for fun outside.

2. Summer storms

After a long, hot day nothing is better than a quick shower to cool everything off. Plus, there is that wonderful smell of grass after it rains that is so synonymous with the season and takes us back to our own childhoods.

3. Fireworks

There is something magical about sitting outside on a picnic blanket, anxiously waiting that first pop signaling the rest of the show. Watching a fireworks display is, and always will be, the definitive summer activity.

4. Lightning Bugs

Whether you call them fireflies, lightning bugs or glow bugs, the first time these little critters light up the sky is a sure sign that summer has arrived.

5. Picnics and picnic food

Warm comfort foods have a place in our hearts, but summer is the only time we have a real excuse to indulge in hot dogs, hamburgers, potato salad and other yummy picnic staples without apology, plus getting together with friends and family for outdoor fun is definitely a plus.

6. No school

Though the house is significantly louder, it’s nice to have the kids’ home from school for a few months to catch up on the activities you may not have gotten to during the year.

7. Family vacations

By this time of year, we are so ready to pack up the car and head to the beach we could burst! Heading to the shore, the lake, the country or anywhere away from home is the ultimate way to relax and recoup—and create family memories that are sure to last a lifetime.

8. Summer fruits

Sure, apples are delicious, but everyone knows that summer is the season for all the best fruits. Peaches, strawberries, blueberries, watermelon and many others are all at their peak and ready for eating.

9. The pool

It doesn’t matter if you have one in your backyard or make the trek to your local pool, summer hasn’t arrived until the kids (and you) have taken that first dip!

10. Warm weather

The most obvious reason summer is the best season is warm weather! There’s nothing we love more than breaking out those beloved shorts, T-shirts and dresses so our skin can see the light of day.
