Uganda Tourism Board has recently announced an English test for UK visa in Uganda. The move comes after minister Godfrey Kiwanda said that the Uganda government was one of the most corrupt in world and officials in the tourism board were interfering with some of the country’s tourism sites. The English language test for UK visa in Uganda is based on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). This is one of the most popular ways used by government authorities to assess the language skills of foreign candidates.

You don’t need to be a genius to pass your visa interview at the British embassy in Kampala. In fact, if you have gone to a good secondary school and are able to communicate adequately in English, then you are qualified to apply for your UK visa.If you have been invited for the purpose of a settlement or you are going there to visit family or friends and will be visiting for about 6 months to 2 years for graduation, this is the visa for you. What is IELTS for UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI)?

If you are looking to work or study in UK, you may need to apply for a UK Visa and demonstrate that you have met the required level of English by taking a Home Office approved Secure English Language Test (SELT), such as IELTS for UKVI (Academic and General Training) or IELTS Life Skills.

What is the difference in test format between IELTS and IELTS for UKVI?

IELTS and IELTS for UKVI are the same in terms of format, content, scoring and level of difficulty. However, the Test Report Form which contains your results is slightly different to show that you have taken the test at an official IELTS for UKVI location, which is approved by the UK Home Office.   

Which test format should I take?

If you are a student, please check with your university / college / school which test you need before booking.

If you are applying for a Student Visa (Tier 4) at a higher education institution to enter directly onto a bachelor or postgraduate degree at a university that is a Tier 4 Sponsor, you must meet the English language level set by the institution. All British universities and colleges accept IELTS Academic results This means you may not need to take an IELTS for UKVI (Academic) test but can submit an IELTS Academic result.

Taking IELTS for UKVI with the British Council

IELTS for UKVI (Academic and General Training) tests and IELTS Life Skills are taken at a UKVI approved test centre. British Council has UKVI approved venues across the world. You can choose between paper-based or computer-delivered IELTS for UKVI when you book your test.

Test schedule / timings

Your Listening, Reading, and Writing sections of the test will be completed on the same day with no break in between. During the pandemic, we are running tests in the morning and in the afternoon. All sessions allow social distancing. Morning sessions are usually between 9.00 am and 12.00 pm. Afternoon sessions are usually between 1.00 pm and 4.00 pm.  

If you take IELTS on paper, your Speaking test will take place on a different day to the other sections of the test, in a 7-day window before or after the main test day. You will receive an email confirming your Speaking test date 48 hours in advance. 

Choose your Speaking test slot

You can choose your Speaking test slot whether you take IELTS on a computer or on paper. If we need to change your slot due to the pandemic, we will notify you by email or phone.
