Dream Vacation In Hawaii

I’ve always wanted to daydream about a dream vacation in Hawaii. I love the idea of warm, humid weather and sitting in the sand avoiding all kinds of work. There’s just something relaxing and fun about staring out into the ocean while being serenaded by the sound of crashing waves. However, I’m not going to be taking a real vacation anytime soon so I thought, why not take a quick mental vacation in Hawaii with my mind? This is how I plan on having my dream vacation in Hawaii right now.

I’ve been looking for a way to describe the tropical paradise that is Hawaii. The first thing that comes to mind is ‘paradise on earth.’ To quote an iconic reality television show, it’s ‘a place where dreams come true.’ When you wake up in the morning, the sun shines through your window. You get up, stare outside and see grass and flowers (yes – there is grass on this tropical island). There are 2 different pools with island views. Outside of your condo or hotel room, waterfalls, koi ponds, and tropical gardens all surround you. In fact, even just getting to the beach is an adventure in itself. After you arrive, you set down your belongings on the sand and take in the sites around you. Sea turtles play in the waters near shore as a few people paddle by using standup paddleboards. A grill sits under a tent a few feet from where you sit so you can have some burgers or lobster for lunch or dinner! Just listen to that sound! It’s the sound of the ocean gently crashing onto the white sandy beaches of Hawaii’s Big Island (also known as The Island Of Hawaii). You know that feeling when you are on vacation, carefree and relaxed. You have time to enjoy and no papers to grade. It’s a feeling that is rare in our busy lives and it makes all the hard work worth it. Stress free, an escape from reality, there are many reasons why vacations are important to us. But what if you could have that feeling of freedom anytime?

Which Island for Dream Vacation?

I have been granted a wish trip from the dream factory and I have had my heart set on going somewhere tropical and i thought Hawaii would be a good choice seeming Bora Bora is a fair bit out of their price range. However I am not sure which island to choose and I am only allowed to stay on one island for the week. Along with me will be my parents and my 9 year old brother so something family friendly is more what I am looking for. I would love to try snorkelling and very much enjoy marine life. I’m not looking for a Shopping and city vibe but more of a nature based vacation. And i have never been in the ocean so a nice beach would be nice and the time year will probably be during the fall or winter. I also will no be coming back so i really just want to make the most out of this trip so really any advice would be helpful at this point.

Welcome to TA, Jessica. Start with the great info to the upper right on this page. If you will share where you are traveling from and a a nightly budget for lodging, it will help us help you! Sounds like you need a condo to help your search.

Jessica, my thoughts are with you and your family.

Where will you be coming from? I ask because some areas are easier for flights and such.

Can you tell us a little more? Do you have a price range for hotels, like per night–or is it all together with flights?

Oahu has the city of Honolulu, but also has wonderful beaches and rural areas. It may be the easiest-and is often the least expensive, too.

I hope you are able to make the trip the perfect trip.

What’s the first thing you think of when you think “Hawaii“? All the islands have great beaches, snorkeling and beautiful scenery. My first trip was Oahu and it was wonderful but I felt like I was missing out because there’s a live volcano on the Big Island that I didn’t get to see. Just pick the island that has what you most want to see and enjoy every minute.

Okay, that helps some, Jessica. There are good flights into Maui from some parts of Canada, and Oahu too.

Depending on your issues, the gases and such at Volcano National Park may not be a good thing–plus the island is huge and to see it well will require a lot of car time.

Maui or Kaua’i would work, as would Oahu.

Some places on Oahu would include AulaniTurtle Bay, Ko Olina, or in Honolulu, maybe Hilton Hawaiian Village, Outrigger Reef, Outigger on the Beach, or Embassy Suites.

On Maui, I’d look at Marriott WaileaKaanapali Beach Hotel, Hyatt Regency Kaanapali, Maui Kaanapali Villas, Honua Kai, Westin Resort & Spa, and the Ritz Carlton Kapalua.

I hope these give you a starting point!

Since you mentioned Bora Bora as top choice, I think seeing the north shore of Kauai could be a good option. It’s incredibly beautiful with the jagged green mountains you may be envisioning and a more quiet, relaxed atmosphere. But of course all the islands are beautiful in different ways and all can offer nice beaches, scenery, and activities.

The Top Question on the right side of screen called Summary of Each Island has some good basic info on what each island has to offer (one article here:

http://www.tripadvisor.com/Travel-g28932-c1048/Hawaii:United-States:Hawaiian.Islands.html

A general guide book covering all islands may also be helpful, maybe something like Hawaii for Dummies. The more you read, the more one particular island may call to you.

Best of luck, I hope you have a fantastic trip!Edited: 6 years ago

Hi Jessica

Some Canadian cities have flights that go directly to Maui or Oahu. With a short trip that can save you time.

Most first time visitors go to Oahu and stay in Waikiki. Waikiki is a busy area on a beach. Lots of activities, shopping and tons of restaurant choices. If you check for vegetarian restaurants you can see how many are in Waikiki area. Most travellers to Waikiki do not rent a car. Any other island a car makes the trip a lot more enjoyable.

Welcome to trip advisor.

I may be wrong, but I think there are more flights on superior aircraft from the mainland to and from Honolulu on Oahu and Kahului on Maui. I think there may be more things to interest your family on Maui. If you come between January and March, you would see whales from Maui (and from Big Island of Hawaii). Maui has many easy-access beaches with good snorkeling. It has Maui Ocean Center.

This site has aerials, reviews and rates on almost every lodging in Hawaii, including condos (my choice for families): http://www.hawaiirevealed.com

You might also be interested in the NCL cruise that departs Honolulu every Saturday and would show you highlights of Kauai, Maui and Big Island of Hawaii. You’d certainly see whales from the cruise ship in winter!

Jessica, we all understand and we’ll all love to help wherever we can to make your Tropical Trip happen.

Maui is calling you. Nice beaches, terrific snorkelling opportunities especially for beginners, relaxing vibe, no big cities. There are hotel and restaurant strips that are so laid back, nestling the shore of Lahaina Harbour.

The dominant feature of the Island is the 10,000ft high dormant volcano, named Haleakala (House of the Sun).

Maui is also home to The Old Lahaina Luau, a great evening under the stars telling the tale of Polynesians in Hawaii with traditional dance. All your family would love this.

The North East section of the island is home to the infamous Road to Hana. It winds through tropical rainforests, bamboo forests, rainbow eucalypts past red and black sand beaches, to the ultimate eye candy of the Seven Sacred Pools of Oheo Gulch.

So much more to see and experience there so I would expect some Maui Destination Experts will now chime in to give you a detailed overview of this Island paradise.

Our love to you and your family…

I’ll just add that Oahu and Maui both have decent medical facilities. (Kauai and Big Island…not so much.) Cruise ships have sick bays, staffed by an MD and RN.

Most of us on these forums prefer a stay ON an island. I brought up the cruise in case you wanted something more organized; the ship offers tours from ports to islands’ attractions. This would be an easy ‘package’ for the organization to buy for you and your family.

I don’t think we mentioned yet that autumn can be unpleasantly hot and humid in the islands. September is the hottest month, and this year the heat lingered. May is a lovely time almost everywhere, with even more flowers.
