Diwali Vacation In Gujarat

AHMEDABAD: The Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) on Tueday announced that the Diwali vacation will be from October 29 to November 18 for all state board schools. At a time when schools are closed due to Covid-19 pandemic, all educational activities, including online classes will remain shut in this twenty-day vacation period, according to a GSHSEB statement.
Schools and colleges have been closed in the state for the last six months and many educational institutions are conducting online classes and exams.
The state government is yet to take a call on re-opening of schools after the Diwali vacation. State education minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama said recently that a decision in this regard will be taken soon, after consultation with various stakeholders including parents, students, school trustees, teachers and prominent educationists.
The minister said the most crucial opinion in reopening schools will be of the health department.

FelixadsThe minister said he will then discuss the issue with chief minister Vijay Rupani, deputy chief minister Nitin Patel and the entire cabinet before taking a final decision on reopening schools.
The Centre had in the recent ‘Unlock 5’ guidelines suggested re-opening schools from October 15 in a limited manner. The states have been given the authority to decide if they wanted to reopen schools or not. THe Gujarat government decided not to reopen schools from October 15.
In the last couple of months the state government has held few rounds of meetings with various stakeholders, some of who have suggested staggered attendance and calling students on alternate days.

Gujarat board announces Diwali vacation from October 29

Gujarat Board schools in the state will have Diwali vacation from October 29 to November 18. The Gujarat Secondary Education Board announced the 21 days of vacation for this academic year.

The board has however not made any announcement regarding the term exams in schools. Usually, the term exams are held before the Diwali vacations.

A letter from the board said that every year it comes out with a calendar for various schedules including holidays and exams. But this year due to COVID-19, the schools reopened late and it also did not come out with the usual schedule calendar.

As a result, it became imperative for the board to announce the Diwali vacation since several teachers and other staff members continue to teach from school.

It should be noted that education in the state continues to be online and the government has not yet decided whether to open schools or not. It is also not known if and when the schools will be reopened.

As of now, only staff members are called to the schools while children study from home.

School reopening post-Diwali vacation?

Earlier education minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama had held a meeting with schools and primary education officials concerning reopening of schools. 

In the webinar meeting, the education minister had hinted that the state may not reopen schools for up to class 8 even after Diwali. Physical classes may likely resume for students of class 9 to 12.

If students are allowed to attend schools post the Diwali vacation in November it will be subject to several conditions. It is being speculated that if schools open, the government will not allow school vans to ferry kids to avoid violating social distancing norms.
