Aspen in Christmas

It is no surprise that Aspen goes all out for the winter festive season. What To Do In Aspen Colorado Winter

Christmas in Aspen Colorado is a beautiful time. The snow, the lights, the music, the food! It is all there and ready to be celebrated. Here are a few ideas for things to do in Aspen over the Christmas period.

1. Ice Skating

Ice skating is great for those at all levels of skill (be sure to hold the rail if you’re a beginner – or get a lesson). The Aspen Recreation Centre has a great ice skating rink in town.

2. Skiing/Snowboarding

The Aspen ski and snowboarding experience are really a few different mountains in one. Aspen Highlands, Aspen (or Ajax) Mountain, Buttermilk, and Snowmass are all accessible with the same snow pass ticket (that includes ground transportation between the mountains themselves.)

If you are a beginner or advanced, skiing in Aspen is ideal as there are slopes and areas dedicated to every skill level.

Buttermilk and Snowmass tend to be more catered towards beginners with great teaching facilities and some easier runs. Whereas the Aspen Highland and Ajax have a lot more advanced slopes. These advanced slopes can be accessed right in Aspen downtown. You can literally walk (if you’re staying downtown) up the street and be at the gondola to take you up the slopes. Buttermilk and Snowmass require a short (15 to 20 minute) shuttle ride.

3. See live music at Belly-up

Belly-up is a venue that attracts some of the world’s biggest names. They often have events over Aspen Christmas, and purchasing a ticket to a live concert could be the perfect ‘experience gift’ if you want a minimalist Christmas. Check the gig guide calendar for details.

4. Retail Therapy

There is no limit to how much you could spend in Aspen retail stores. With high-flying designer brands, there are some of the world’s most luxurious stores in these downtown streets. You’ll see Prada, Gucci, Louis Vitton, as well as an array of designer hats and snow wear.

We usually give our friends and family eco friendly gifts for Christmas, and you can also find things in Aspen that are locally made. There are some talented, local artists that sell jewelry made from old skis in The Emporium and Flying Circus. It is a quirky store in town that has a lot of unique pieces.

5. Shop at the Thrift Store

You’ll be surprised at what you can find in the Aspen Thrift Store. There are some great deals on good-quality snow gear and brands. In some cases, it may work out better to buy some snow gear for the week and donate it back rather than renting gear.

6. Have a drink at the brewery

The Aspen Brewing Co. is situated conveniently downtown with an outdoor deck with views up to the Aspen Mountain. You can drink some great locally brewed beer and watch the skiers make their way down the slopes.

7. Visit the Art Museum

If you get a blizzard day and don’t feel like spending much time outdoors you can check out the Art Museum which is free to enter. They have some impressive collections and update regularly.

8. Walk the snow trails

If you are staying in town there is a nice easy walk along a track if you follow Ute Avenue that takes you along the Roaring Fork River and past the Ute Cemetery. If you want to go “off-road” there are a couple of easy trails that basically follow the road back along a forest trail. It is a great walk for those looking to experience snowed-in woods without going far from town.

If you are looking for something a little more adventurous there are some great Aspen hiking trailsthat you will need snowshoes for.
