Can I Work Full Time On Student Visa In Australia

So you’ve finally made the move and decided to take a gap year in Australia.  As well as being one of the best countries in the world, it is also known for being one of the most famous places to live abroad. There aren’t many destinations that can offer a high quality of life with year-round fine weather, but Australia is one of them.

Whether you’re here for a year for visiting, a University exchange student, or you have a special skills work visa such as an ’18 months post study work visa’ or a TSS (Temporary Skill Shortage) work visa, you may have questions about your ability to earn money in Australia on a student visa, especially if you’re from an English speaking country outside of Canada, U.S. or UK.

International Students can now Work for 40+ Hours per Fortnight

Posted 24th January 2022

The Australian government recently announced a temporary relaxation of working hours for those holding Student Visas. This means that students can now work for more than 40 hours per fortnight.

“This is a great initiative for all our students currently on a student visa and in Adelaide. This will help them gain a meaningful experience in the working environment while supporting themselves financially during this difficult time,” says Nereshnee Shunmugam, CMU-A Director of Admissions & Student Affairs.

Here’s what we know so far:

  • Students can work more than 40 hours per fortnight even if their classes are ongoing.
  • Students can seek employment before the start of their classes.
  • Students are still required to maintain course enrollment, ensure satisfactory course attendance, and course progress, in compliance with their visa requirements.
  • The relaxation of working hours also includes secondary applicants.
  • The relaxation of working hours is only until April 2022, subject for review by the government.
  • Student visa holders who cancel their enrollment, stop attending classes, or fail to meet satisfactory progress, may result in a breach in their visa.

This announcement came at perfect timing as StudyAdelaide is about to officially launch Job Shop – an exciting initiative designed to help new and returning students secure a job even before arriving in Adelaide.

Hundreds of part-time and casual jobs are available with companies ranging from retail, events, fast food, and hospitality. The Job Shop page allows students to browse through available positions and send in their applications directly to potential employers. This opportunity will open doors for students to earn some income, meet new people, broaden their network, and get a taste of Australian culture.

“Students must ensure that they maintain satisfactory academic performance while taking full advantage of this opportunity,” adds Nereshnee.

Study Adelaide also prepared workshops that can help equip students in their job hunt. Workshops scheduled this February include resume writing and how to present your best self to employers.
