If you’re already in the air with your first stop being Egypt, then you will have to get a visa upon landing at the airport. However, if this is not the case and you are merely looking to visit Egypt for vacations or other leisure trips, then it would be necessary to apply for an e-visa before your trip. A tourist visa may also be applied at an Egyptian embassy in certain cases provided you meet the necessary requirements. Be sure to check with the Egyptian Embassy near your country of origin or residence ahead of time.

Egypt is one of those countries that uses a visa to regulate who enters their country and how long they can stay in their borders. But I’m getting ahead of myself.

Being on top of your travel documents can be vitally important. We all have that one story of flying somewhere, knowing we had all our paperwork in order, only to find out at the airport that we had missed something. Or worse, not found a document and being told we can no longer travel to our destination. Travelling these days can mean having a very rigorous set of procedures, sometimes including multiple applications for entry into a country.

All visitors to Egypt need to obtain a visa to enter the country unless they are from a visa-exempt country. There are different types of entry visa to Egypt: the visa on arrival, and the Egypt e-Visa.

The Egypt visa on arrival has been available for a long time. It is possible to obtain one at the Egyptian border. Eligible citizens queue, apply for, process, and pay for the visa on arrival.

The alternative is the Egypt e-Visa which was introduced in November 2017. It allows travellers to apply for an entry visa to Egypt online in just a few minutes. On arrival, the traveller presents the e-Visa at the Egyptian border control, along with their passport.

The Government of Egypt implemented the electronic Egypt visitor visa to increase security and also to improve and quicken the process of admitting tourists.

Though both visas allow visitors to enter Egypt, there are some key differences between the two forms of travel authorization of which travellers to Egypt should be aware.
