Brighton, England is a seaside resort town on the southern coast of England. It lies within the city of Brighton and Hove and has been an independent city since 1997. The eastern part of Brighton forms part of the Brighton Kemptown parliamentary constituency, represented in parliament by Lloyd Russell-Moyle of the Labour Party, with the rest falling within the Brighton Pavilion constituency, represented in parliament by Caroline Lucas of the Green Party.
The first settlement in what is now called Brighton was made in 979 AD by monks who built their monastery on the small Island of St. Peter in the middle of what is now known as Brighton’s Kemp Town lake. The monastery later became a Saxon village named “Brighton” which eventually grew and merged with its neighbouring villages to form the town we know today. In the 17th century, King Charles I encouraged people from all over Britain to settle there to escape high taxes and religious persecution elsewhere, giving rise to what would become one of Britain’s most popular resorts for sea bathing and other forms of recreation such as boating and fishing along its shoreline at nearby locations such as Rottingdean & Saltdean along with Brighton itself where both
