Winter in Aspen is a magical time of year. The snow-covered mountains are breathtaking, and the crisp air is just so invigorating!
If you’re planning on spending some time in Aspen this winter, you’ll want to make sure that your accommodations are up to snuff. Here are some of the best places to stay in Aspen in the winter:
Hotel Jerome
Built in 1889, it was one of the first buildings west of the Mississippi to have full electric lighting. The U.S. Army’s 10th Mountain Division, or “soldiers on skis” trained nearby and often stayed at the hotel, and Hunter S. Thompson used its famed J-Bar as his office while running for sheriff. Even after a recent thoughtful renovation, the property’s history still takes center stage—this is historic Aspen at its finest. Guest or not, drop by the lobby for a cocktail by the fire or visit the J-Bar for a burger and an Aspen Crud—a vanilla shake spiked with bourbon that has its origins in Prohibition, when the bar moonlighted as a soda fountain.
On particularly frosty nights, guests should order a hot chocolate to their room (complete with homemade marshmallows) and tuck into bed with a (faux) fur–covered hot water bottle. In 2018, the Aspen Times building will reopen adjacent to the property and will house an old-fashioned barbershop as well as the entrance to an underground speakeasy.

In some of the upscale hotels in Aspen, you can’t even obtain a mini fridge.

There aren’t many other amenities here or breakfast options, but it’s ok since you’re located right on Main Street in Aspen, which means restaurants, bars, and shops are just steps away. There are a lot of room types you can choose to book here from suites to three-bedroom apartments, but they all have kitchens, fireplaces, and balconies. As such, pricing varies a lot based on availability during the peak season. But it’s a great location near the Elk Camp Gondola, so you can also expect the on-site ski lockers to be easy to access.
You’ll also find a heated outdoor pool and hot tub here to wind down after a day of tackling the slopes at Aspen Snowmass. And even though it’s more of a condo-style living situation, you can still access a complimentary shuttle to get you to the village for the evening.
