You’ve finally made the decision to travel to Canada. You’ve got your mind set on Vancouver, with an extensive list of things you want to see and do while you are there. There is just one slight problem — well, not really a problem exactly … it’s more of a legal requirement. In order to enter Canada, particularly without any criminal charges pending against you, you must first apply and receive an entry/exit visa (aka Esta Visa).
If you have been vacationing in the United States for at least three months, and also have a valid visa for Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, or The Bahamas, then you are eligible to submit an ESTA application online. Unlike the visa that allows you to travel from one country to another, the ESTA Visa is just a travel validation which provides you with a clearance to enter the U.S.
What’s an ESTA?
An ESTA (officially known as the Electronic System for Travel Authorisation) lets you visit the US for less than 90 days without needing a visa – as long as it’s for a holiday or a business trip. It’s called the visa waiver program.

Do I need an ESTA?
You’ll need one if:
- You’re a UK citizen or a citizen from another visa waiver country visiting the US
- Your trip is for 90 days or less and is for business or pleasure
- You’re arriving by plane or cruise ship – you don’t need an ESTA if you’re driving into the US from Mexico or Canada
How can I apply?
Official guidance says to submit your application at least 72 hours prior to travel. And remember, you need an ESTA even if you’re going to change planes in America.
- Apply online via the official ESTA website. Allow up to 72 hours for a response, though your application may be processed instantly.
- Make a note of the application number so you can check your ESTA status or update your information.
- Make your ESTA payment – it currently costs $14 if you do it directly via the ESTA website. You’ll probably pay more if you do it through a travel agent. If you’re refused entry to the United States you’ll only be charged $4.
- View your application status – once your ESTA is approved, it’s valid for two years and you can make multiple trips back to America during this time without having to reapply.You don’t need to print off or take your ESTA information with you when you travel – it will automatically be sent to your carrier.
